A PACKED PROGRAMME OF ACTIVITIES
Outdoor Activities
Within easy reach of the Venture Centre are areas of great natural beauty which provide opportunities for exciting outdoor pursuits. These range from walking and cycling to climbing, caving, canoeing and other water sports led by fully qualified instructors.
Cross Curricular Learning – Education and Personal Development
The area is well suited to a wide range of cross curricular educational projects encompassing history, geography, science and P.S.H.E. as well as creative language and art.
Environmental Studies
The location of the Venture Centre makes it an ideal base for studies of woodland and wetland. From the play area there is direct access to the woods, watercourses and meadows of Slinter Valley and Dunsley Meadows Local Nature Reserve. This large area is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and is available for groups to explore.
Alternatively groups can study rural conservation by finding out all about the art of dry stone walling as well as learning the skills of video filming and editing in order to record their experiences.
Cromford Green Energy Project
The Venture Centre offers its unique and contemporary two-day two-night residential experience for primary and secondary schools in which students take part in a range of energy based science activities aimed to raise ‘Energy Literacy’. This enables students to develop their knowledge of key curriculum links: materials and their properties, renewable energy and scientific investigation. More details on this programme are available here.
Corporate Volunteering
The Venture Centre works closely with a number of major companies to provide opportunities for employee volunteering schemes. These can range from a few people to a few hundred working on conservation activities in the woods, watercourses and fields adjoining the Venture Centre or at other locations belonging to the Arkwright Society.

What the kids and teachers say
'Trust of adults, enjoyment, a snatch of childhood; for many, the chance to experience the ordinary.' Headteacher, Derwent Community School, Derby
'Turned an adventure into a dream holiday for children whose almost universal phrase changed from "I can't do that" into "What are we doing now?" Faircroft Community Home, Surrey
'I always perceive a significant strengthening of the group after each Cromford trip. I cannot overstress the importance of taking young people out of their inner city environment and giving them the opportunity of thinking and behaving differently'. St Paul's Youth Theatre, Birmingham
