Master Plan
The long term strategic plan for Cromford Mills
As part of the HLF phase 1 emergency works programme that took place at Cromford Mills in 2002, a number of consultants were involved in developing a long term strategic plan for the site. This included a “development study” by Event, retail and catering strategies developed by Four IV and a financial model by DTZ
It was during this period that the concept of a World Heritage Site Gateway facility on the Ground floor of Building 17 was first considered along with plans to develop Building 18, with its two top floors reinstated, as the Cromford exhibition.
However, whilst much of the work and some of the conclusions from the consultants work were useful, the Society did not formally adopt all of the schemes proposed and the work was left incomplete. The Society was keen however to develop the largest building on site, known as Building 17, as a ground floor Gateway and the upper floors as rentable office accommodation. Details of the Gateway Project are available here
In 2009 funding was secured from the Duke of Devonshire's Charitable Trust to commission a team to update the Masterplan. Due to timing issues with funders the masterplanning exercise would not precede the Building 17 project development work but would run in parallel to it. The masterplan process is now well underway and a copy of the draft report is now available to download here (Volume 1) and here (Volume 2). Please note that these are large files (3.48MB and 6.26MB) which may take some time to download.
The Masterplan will be updated as work progresses. Website users will also be able to see the plans for Options A-D which have been considered during the masterplanning process.
