‘The Pit’ – a Venture Centre project 

A new project is underway at Cromford Venture Centre to conduct an archaeological excavation of a redundant wheel pit on the Centre’s play area.
For many years the strange damp and dark pit has lain overgrown with vegetation and with just some chestnut fencing to mark its boundaries. Clues to the former purpose of the pit were found in an old painting showing a mill building standing on the site but it was only recently that funding support from Renaissance East Midlands has allowed us to put together a project to launch a proper investigation of the site.

Willing labour for the dig is being supplied by young volunteers from The Blend youth project in Ripley who are making three two-day visits to the Venture Centre to undertake the work. The whole dig is being supervised by Sam Farnham, a young archaeologist based at the University of Nottingham who is helping the young volunteers to learn to work carefully and methodically. Safety is a prime consideration and because of danger from possibly unstable stonework above the pit a scaffolding construction has been installed to provide a temporary roof to the working area.

The first working session took place in late October and great progress was made in clearing the site of excess vegetation and in removal of loose debris which had collected in the pit. The pit now looks far larger and much more impressive. Marks scored on the stone wall by the turning wheel allowed a calculated estimate of the size of the actual wheel to be made. The calculation gave a wheel diameter of about 6½ metres.

When the group returns in a couple of weeks for their second visit, the task will be to excavate the remaining material in the actual pit then to find a way to discover how the water was returned to the mill pond so it could be used again to drive the wheels of the existing corn mill.

Well you could start by cleaning up your spleling.
