What is it & who
can use it?
The Cromford Venture Centre is a residential centre housed in part of an old
maltings and kiln stands on the edge of the historic village of Cromford. It
caters for parties of young people from the age of eight upwards. The former
maltings is now living and dormitory accommodation and the kiln, where once
the malt was roasted, has been turned into dining and meeting room space. The
Centre offers self catering accommodation for parties of up to 24 young people
and four leaders and provides an ideal base for weekend or through the week
study visits, holidays, training and self development courses.
The Centre has been designed with the needs
of the physically challenged in mind but has wheelchair access
only for a limited number. Details are available on request.
The staff rooms are comfortable and large
enough to provide an oasis of calm after the rigours of a day
in the open air. There are separate staff showers and washing
facilities.
A recent addition to the Venture Centre’s
facilities is the Gothic Warehouse on Cromford Canal Wharf.
The venue consists of two large, fully equipped meeting rooms
and the ground floor has wheelchair access.
The Corn Mill to which the kiln and maltings
were attached was built in 1780 on the edge of a community
which was then just taking shape. This was Sir Richard Arkwright’s
factory village. Today Cromford is part of the Derwent Valley
Mills World heritage Site and attracts visitors from all over
the world. The cotton mills at the heart of it all are now
well established as a popular heritage visitors attraction.
The Venture Centre's Aims
The creation of the Centre owes much to the
Prince’s Trust which contributed to the pump-priming
finance and the inspiration. The centre's purpose is encompassed
in the words
the Trust itself chose to express its aims. "We seek to inspire
and enable young people, particularly the most disadvantaged,
to develop themselves and to serve the community." We do not
wish to exclude any group of young people from our centre,
but groups from disadvantaged backgrounds will be especially
welcome.
The Venture Centre is supported by
a number of corporate and charitable organisations who have
donated funds to financially assist certain groups using
the centre. With donations from such companies as Servern
Trent, Capital One, The Derbyshire Building Society to name
but a few, we are able to offer support to groups who fit
the criteria.
